A statement of priorities, President Obama gave his third state of the union address on January 24,2012. Encouraging unity among the nation and more specifically amongst the parties, he spent the majority of the hour highlighting the commonalities of citizens and congressmen and women alike.
Obama shifted the weight of importance toward the economy, economic fairness, and education. His words, however, opened him up to the criticisms of Republicans seeking their party’s nomination. Elected to respond on behalf of the republicans was Indiana governor Mitch Daniels.” The Republicans, have passed bills to reduce borrowing, reform entitlements, and encourage new job creation, only to be shot down nearly time again by the president and his Democrat Senate allies,” he said. Obama-supporters, and citizens journalists lambasted Daniels for accusing Obama for sewing the dissension between the working class and the elite. Contrarily, Obama emphasized the defining issue of the present time is how to keep the promise of America alive. “What’s at stake are not Democratic values or Republican values, but American values. We have to reclaim them,” said the President.
