Did SOPA & PIPA intend to kill the internet?

On Wednesday, January 18, 2012, over 7,000 websites went on a protest against SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect Intellectual Property Act) that are in the process of being either passed or rejected by Congress. Websites such as Wikipedia and Google lead this protest by either having a “black-out”, where they shut their site down for 24 hours, or posted information to educate its visitors and even going as far as to post an interactive petition on their sites for their visitors to contact their local Councilmen. Many who are in opposition of this act feel that by passing this bill, this gives the government full control in censorship of the web. Those are for this act feel the intentions are good, seeing as how they would like to protect copyrighted material and intellectual property so that the individuals or entities who produced such items, receive full payment for their work. If this bill is passed, many popular sites, such as blogging sites, may be subject to being permanently shut down. Can you imagine a world (of this day and age) where your favorite websites are taken down because of this legislation; where a simple thing as posting a picture without the original photographer’s consent may land you in jail or result in you paying a fine? Although the intentions of these bills seem to be of good intentions, on the surface, can the government take such immense control and censor the entire internet? Is it even possible to control such an entity? Your thoughts.
